Elope, or big ceremony? How do I know what's right for us?
Let’s talk weddings. You know, the big, 200-guest, open-bar, centerpiece-juggling, cake-fondling, 5 or more vendors starting at a few grand each, dance-until-grandma-regrets-her-heels kind of weddings.
Now don’t get me wrong — traditional weddings can be beautiful, emotional, and downright magical. I should know. But they can also be stressful, expensive, and more about Aunt Linda’s gluten-free entrée than your actual love story.
Hi, I’m Hannah, your friendly neighborhood wedding and elopement photographer. I’ve captured both epic ballroom bashes and quiet mountaintop vows — and let me tell you: sometimes, smaller really is better. (Stop giggling. We’re adults here… kind of.)
So here it is, folks: why eloping might just be the best decision you ever make (besides saying "yes" to the person who actually folds their laundry).
1. Elopements are Ridiculously Intimate
There’s something wildly romantic about standing on a cliffside, hand-in-hand with your partner, saying your vows while the wind gently threatens to mess up your hair (don’t worry, I’ve got bobby pins and emergency hairspray).
You don’t have to perform your love story in front of 200 people. Eloping means you get to focus on each other — not on your third cousin’s toddler licking the cake table.
As your photographer, I get to step back and capture the quiet glances, the whispered “I love yous,” and all the beautifully unscripted moments — without a mic squealing or a DJ shouting over your vows.
2. Weddings Cost a Lot. Elopements? Not So Much.
You could drop $30,000+ on a traditional wedding. Or you could elope somewhere gorgeous, book an amazing photographer (ahem), grab a few stylish outfits, and maybe even splurge on a helicopter ride — and still spend less.
No chair covers, no chicken vs. fish debates, and no paying $10 per guest for custom napkins they’ll likely not even notice.
With elopements, your budget goes toward experiences and memories, not chair rentals and custom cocktail napkins that say “#somesillyhashtag.”
3. Less Drama, More Adventure
Eloping skips the group chats, family feuds, and RSVP stress. You won’t have to worry about where to seat your divorced uncles or whether your college roommate and your high school bestie will awkwardly bond over that one time you passed out at prom.
Instead, imagine hiking to a breathtaking overlook at sunrise, saying your vows as the sun rises, and popping champagne while the birds cheer you on. Way less drama — unless you count nature being extra with a double rainbow (which I will photograph, obviously).
4. You Can Still Have Your Cake and Eat it Too (Seriously)
Worried about missing out on the party? You don’t have to. Many couples elope and then throw a relaxed reception later — backyard BBQ, taco truck, karaoke night, whatever fits you. No chicken dance required.
And yes, you can absolutely still wear a jaw-dropping outfit, get your makeup professionally done, and cut a delicious cake. I will be there to photograph it all — cake crumbs on your face included.
5. Your Love Story, Your Way (With Less Noise and Way More Views)
Eloping gives you the freedom to write your own rules. Want to get married barefoot in the desert? Done. Vows in the forest, followed by a picnic and star-gazing? I'm there with camera (and snacks).
Your wedding should feel like you — not like a Pinterest board gone rogue.
Final Thoughts (Before You Elope and Call Me)
Whether you're standing on a beach with your toes in the sand or exchanging vows in your backyard with your dog as the ring bearer, eloping strips away the chaos and brings the focus back to what matters: your love, your story, and your future together.
And as someone who’s photographed it all — champagne-soaked ballroom receptions, teary-eyed mountaintop vows, and everything in between — I can honestly say: eloping isn’t just simpler. It’s sweeter, quieter, deeper. And, let’s be real, it looks amazing in photos.
So if you’re ready to ditch the banquet hall and do things your way, let’s make some magic. I’ll bring the camera — and maybe a tissue or two (for happy tears, of course).
